This GMK Keycap set, designed by Oblotzky was inspired by an early engineering prototype of the Micro Switch Hall Effect Keyboard. This set is designed around ASCII, the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, an early method for universal computer input that is still used today.

The sublegends on this set show the corresponding ASCII control character for each letter. Following the American Standard Code you can convert between the two by adding or subtracting 64 from each key’s value. This is a holdover from older designs where a lever physically shifted the board. Today, you can see the relationship visually by switching columns in an ASCII table.

This same relationship is found in Modern Linux terminals as they emulate the original behavior. Ctrl-H creates as backspace, and Ctrl-[ works as escape (something many VIM users appreciate). Ever wondered what would happen when you press Ctrl and other keys? Now you have a set that will tell you exactly what happens!
